Counselor’s Corner

Sparking Joy During Difficult Times

When is the last time you looked at your own childhood photos? And those of your children?

Often times we see fun loving children enjoying simple pleasures, being carefree, full of joy and laughter. Through the burdensome times we currently live in, it is all too easy to forget or lose that spirit.

Children are present oriented. Now is what matters. They find joy in simple things, laugh out loud, and live with a sense of possibility for adventure. In the complex era we live in with all its challenges, it takes some effort to find and nurture a child-like spirt. But it can be done, and it can awaken joy in mundane daily life.

How to recapture that spirit? Do something simple that sparks joy. Play catch. Blow bubbles. Have an egg race. Throw a Frisbee. Splash in the pool. Run in the sprinkler. Play charades. Hug tightly. Sip coffee slowly. Listen to birdsong. Savor the sunset. The possibilities are endless. Revel in these tiny moments of delight.

Breaking up the routine with these simple things can restore joy and silliness in your family life. This can help everyone feel hopeful about life in general, both now and in the future, which is precious in such uncertain times. And you may just reconnect with that childhood spirit, that spark of joy, that may seem like only a remote memory.

“Life is so great that we only get a tiny moment to enjoy everything we see. And that moment is right now.” ~Neil Pasricha, The Book of Awesome
