Building a Culture of Gratefulness

Help During the Pandemic

Counselor’s Corner | 4/27/20. Mental Health Support for Kids and Teens

Kids’ Minds Matter. In partnership with the Lee Health Foundation, Kids’ Minds Matter has launched Mental Health Mondays, a virtual mental wellness series on Facebook.com/KidsMindsMatter, which connects Lee health partners and Southwest Florida mental health advocates with the region’s families to share expert advice, resources and at-home activities for kids. The segments are less than an hour and feature a variety of health and mental health professionals as well as child advocates to help caregivers with their child’s mental health. For additional information about the series and weekly topics see the following link: https://leehealthfoundation.org/2020/04/08/mental-health-mondays/

Supporting Children’s Stress. Not all children respond to stress in the same way. Some common changes to watch for in children include:

  • Excessive crying and irritation
  • Clinginess
  • Returning to behaviors they have outgrown (e.g. toileting accidents or bedwetting)
  • Excessive worry or sadness
  • Unhealthy eating or sleeping habits
  • Irritability and acting out behaviors
  • Difficulty with attention and concentration
  • Unexplained headaches or body pain
  • Avoidance of activities enjoyed in the past

Ways to support your child include:

  • Answer questions and share facts about COVID-19 in a way that your child can understand.
  • Reassure your child that they are safe. Let them know it is OK if they feel upset. Share with them how you deal with your own stress so that they can learn how to cope from you.
  • Limit your family’s exposure to news coverage of the event, including social media. Children may misinterpret what they hear and can be frightened about something they do not understand.
  • Try to keep up a regular daily routine of school work, online instruction and play time.
  • Be a role model. Take breaks, get plenty of sleep, exercise, and eat well. Connect with your friends and family members.
